Pulse and Metronomes

Taught by renowned cellist

tonebase Artists

In this course, we learn important aspects of building rhythmic security. We begin with a basic question answered: how do we practice with a metronome? We then take our newfound knowledge and explore many aspects of building rhythm up to advanced levels, as we learn complex rhythmic combinations and how to apply that knowledge to our playing.

Course Syllabus

Building Pulse

In this lesson, Professor Fred Sherry takes us deep into the realm of practicing rhythms and building our sense of pulse. As Professor Sherry says, "Gaining rhythmic security can be thought if in this way: you know what finger you're going to use and you know what notes you're going to produce, but you don't know where the note is-- so you need to think about the where!"

Advanced Metronome Games

In this lesson, we use excerpts from the chapter entitled "Metronome Games" from Professor Sherry's seminal book A Grand Tour of Cello Technique. We learn ways of experimenting with the metronome and playing around with how the two hands work together. Syncopated rhythms playa big role in this lesson, as we learn how to place fives and other complex patters with the metronome.

Using a Metronome

In this lesson, we go in depth on the uses of a metronome. Step one to using a metronome is often difficult for people, and that is: how to actually stay with the metronome! Metcalf explains practice techniques and ways in which we can train our body and brain to understand the beat and how it relates to the physical motions we must make. As Metcalf notes, "The metronome is never wrong!"
