String Crossings: from Beginner to Advanced

Taught by renowned cellist

tonebase Artists

In the course on string crossings, we learn how to move from string to string with the least amount of effort. From an introduction to string crossings, we learn étude-specific applications of string crossings. We then learn about bow arm "springs," and finally, via master cello soloist Jan Vogler, about advanced string crossing methods.

Course Syllabus

Bow Arm Springs

In this lesson, we learn how the fingers, arm, and hand all work together to form levers and springs by which the strings can be crossed. Professor Greensmith illustrates the differences between string crossings at the tip and the frog. We also learn, Via attitudes from Patti and that tower, as well as repertoire pieces, how to find gradations in string crossings.

Advanced String Crossing Methods

In this lesson, Jan Vogler goes into detail about arm weight, pronation, and even the history of the bow. We learn about bow changes and Vogler tells us that "String crossings are all about strategy." He also emphasizes the role of the elbow as a lever, and tells us that the shoulder needs to play a very minimal role in cello playing overall. Vogler puts a special significant on the music of Bach, as this is filled with strong crossings.

Introduction to String Crossings

In this lesson, we learn about fundamental ways to execute string crossings on the cello. Professor Moses first starts by instructing us to feel the "undulating" of the bow as it crosses the strings.

Etudes for String Crossings

In this lesson, she gives us exercises that will help build awareness of the distances and different angles between the strings. We also study some études to work on string crossings.
