In this course, Astrid Schween, beloved cellist, teacher, and communicator takes us on a guided tour of the masterful, even epic Sonata for Cello and Piano of Chopin. The composer's last work published during his lifetime, the work poses great challenges to both pianist and cellist. Schween draws on many lessons she had with the legendary Jacqueline du Pré as we get insights into the magical, melodic world of Chopin.

Course Syllabus

<p>I. Allegro moderato</p>

<p>In this lesson, we go into depth on the scope of the first movement, the longest and most complex in the piece. Professor Schween teaches us about various bow articulations as well as ho to interact with the complex piano part.</p>

<p>II. Scherzo</p>

<p>In this lesson, we learn about the contrasting characters of the scherzo. We also study how to create long phrases in the trio and to carefully plan where the musical high points are.</p>

<p>III. Largo</p>

<p>In this lesson, we go in depth on one of the greatest slow movements of the entire repertoire. We study how to create a meaningful legato. We also learn about various shifting methods and ways of making the line come alive.</p>

<p>IV. Finale. Allegro</p>

<p>The great range of musical characters-- from brooding, to soulful, to exuberant-- is all covered masterfully in this lesson. We also spend extra time delving into the famous double stop passage, with which Astrid Schween recommends every cellist begin their day.</p>

<p>Performance</p>

<p>In this lesson, cellist Astrid Schween and pianist Noreen Polera perform the complete Sonata for Cello and Piano, op. 65 by Frédéric Chopin.</p>
