I. Allegro ma non troppo

In this lesson, Shaw takes on the dramatic first movement. While exploring the different sections and Barber’s harmonic language, Shaw examines the usage of vibrato, shifts, and expressive intonation in creating a meaningful interpretation.

II. Adagio (with scherzo)

The second movement is unique for its structure and contrasting characters. Shaw shows us how to commit to our musical ideas while trying various ways to approach the music. He shares his take on Spiccato vs. sautillé, sound production, and metronome practice.

III. Allegro appassionato

The fiery third movement requires the cellist to maintain sound intensity. Shaw discusses creating the sound world for the movement, following Barber’s specific markings and rhythms, and how to choose fingerings that will complement the cellist’s musical ideas.
