Course Syllabus

Theme

In the theme of Beethoven Symphony 5 second movement, we learn about bow distribution and the accuracy of the dotted rhythms. We also learn about the subito forte dynamic markings and the pitfalls to avoid.

Variation I

In Variation I, vibrato becomes a bigger issue. We cannot vibrate every note, but we cannot vibrate none of the notes, either! Learn here about selective vibrato, which can take harmonic cues from the pizzicato line in the bass part.

Variation II

In variation II, we have many technical challenges to navigate, but we must also remember that keeping a smooth legato line is crucial. We explore various fingering possibilities, and Professor Kim demonstrates the use of the left-hand thumb in producing the smoothest line we can while minimizing string crossings.
