Forget the Score – Use Your Ears!

Taught by renowned cellist

Fred Sherry

In this lesson, we learn about the importance of trusting our ears and not always, necessarily, what is printed in the score. Drawing on Fred Sherry's interactions with some of the most important composers of the 20th century such as Charles Wuorinen, Elliott Carter, and Olivier Messiaen, we learn that often times composer do not follow what they wrote in the score, instead changing a marking depending on the context. We also study examples from Bach, and learn why the Anna Magdalena score might not be the holy grail many think it to be!
