Music Theory: Tonal Adventures

Taught by renowned cellist

Fred Sherry

In this course, master cellist, theorist, and professor Fred Sherry takes us into the world of theory. We first seek to understand what the role of the circle of fifths plays in music. We later learn how harmony broke down--or didn't-- in the 20th century, and we use examples from composers such as Arnold Schoenberg to understand how music continued to develop in the 20th century.

Tonal Adventures

In this lesson, Fred Sherry shows us how the the circle of fifths functions as a way to link many keys together. Sherry uses both the C major scale and the famous theme from Beethoven’s 9th symphony to illustrate the power of just a few notes. We learn how to explore tonalities on our instrument and we learn how closely related distant keys really are.

How Harmony Broke Down

In this lesson, master cellist and one of America’s leading experts on contemporary music, Fred Sherry, takes this into the world of tonality and atonality. We study examples from Debussy, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, as we learn about the outer reaches of harmony, as well as 12 tone examples.
