Beethoven

Sonata No. 5 in D Major, Op. 102 No. 2

Taught by renowned cellist

Gary Hoffman

Beethoven's five cello sonatas are excellent examples of the master composer at five different periods in his career. In this course, Gary Hoffman explores Beethoven's last and most ambitious, culminating in a Fugue. Hoffman discusses why he thinks fingerings should be informed by phrasing, how to find the right vibrato, and much more.

Course Syllabus

<p id="">Overview</p>

<p id="">Hoffman discusses the fifth sonata in the context of Beethoven's career, and how his writing for the cello became more adventurous with time.</p>

<p id="">I. Allegro con brio</p>

<p id="">In his lesson on the first movement, Hoffman explains his philosophy on fingerings, grace notes, and more.</p>

<p id="">II. Adagio con molto sentimento d'affetto</p>

<p id="">Reminiscent of a chorale, the second movement has very deep subject matter at its heart – that of the composer's own mortality. Hoffman explains how we can communicate this and what it all means.</p>

<p id="">III. Allegro</p>

<p id="">In this lesson, Hoffman brings us full circle to the Allegro. "For music of such magnitude and purity as Beethoven," Hoffman says, "the questions go far beyond what sounds good on the cello."</p>
