Left Hand Setup

In this lesson, Susan Moses shows us the basics of the cello left hand. We study the lower positions, and she explains why even beginning students should be introduced to thumb position. We study techniques such as playing scales with one finger, to familiarize ourselves further with the fingerboard. We also learn about shifting and how best to go about practicing the distances.

How to Sit

In this lesson, we learn about fundamental, basic issues regarding how to sit with the cello. Professor Moses explains everything from the role of the feet to findign the correct length of the endpin. We also learn about finding the angle for the bow to cross strings, and principles of sound, as we are encouraged to scan the room and "look where you have to send your sound!"
