Rieding

Violin Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, Op. 35

Taught by renowned violinist

Christian Kim

In this course from Beginner Violin Course Part 2, Christian Kim guides students through Oskar Rieding’s Concerto in B minor, a staple of early concerto repertoire. Designed to reinforce fundamental skills in a musical context, the course focuses on tone production, détaché and legato bowing, early vibrato application, rhythmic clarity, and expressive phrasing. Christian highlights why Rieding’s writing is both technically approachable and musically mature, helping students build confidence while learning how to shape longer phrases, manage dynamics, and play with stylistic awareness across all three movements.

Course Syllabus

Rieding Violin Concerto No. 2: I. Allegro moderato

Christian introduces the concerto and explains why the first movement is an ideal setting for applying long bows, smooth détaché, and early vibrato in a controlled environment. He breaks down the opening phrases, focusing on even sound, relaxed arm motion, clean string crossings, and avoiding unintended accents. The lesson emphasizes lyrical phrasing, balanced bow speed, and maintaining musical flow while remaining entirely in first position.

Rieding Violin Concerto No. 2: II. Andante

The second movement shifts into a more lyrical Andante while retaining a gentle dance character through its 6/8 meter. Christian explains how to feel the movement in larger beats to create a natural swing and steady pulse. He addresses bow articulation, dynamic shaping, and string crossings, encouraging a flowing détaché that supports legato playing. The lesson also introduces relaxed approaches to dynamic growth, tone color changes, and optional use of slow, wide vibrato on longer notes.

Rieding Violin Concerto No. 2: III. Allegro moderato

In the final movement, Christian focuses on clarity, articulation, and musical contrast within more active passagework. He demonstrates how clean left hand finger action, accurate intonation, and anticipation of string crossings contribute to clear articulation under slurs. The lesson also explores accent execution through controlled bow speed, showing how to shape energy without tension. Christian closes by highlighting the expressive potential of the movement and how thoughtful nuance brings depth to this accessible yet musically rich finale.
