Course Syllabus

Detaché Bow Stroke

This lesson develops a controlled and flexible détaché through full use of the bow. Christian explains how the upper arm, lower arm, and wrist work together across the frog, middle, and tip, with special attention to balance, bow distribution, and maintaining a relaxed shoulder. Practical exercises show how to build consistency, clarity, and sound production without tension.

Vibrato

Christian reframes vibrato as the result of a healthy physical environment rather than a forced motion. He explains how relaxed setup, fingertip flexibility, and an outward arm impulse allow vibrato to emerge naturally. The lesson introduces a slow, targeted exercise designed to build or rebuild vibrato from the ground up with clarity and control.

Left Hand Finger Independence

This lesson focuses on developing finger strength and independence without excess pressure. Christian explains how stable hand shape, efficient finger motion, and controlled lifting improve clarity, intonation, and speed. He demonstrates how mindful repetition builds coordination while keeping the hand relaxed and responsive.

Rieding: Violin Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, Op. 35

In this course from Beginner Violin Course Part 2, Christian Kim guides students through Oskar Rieding’s Concerto in B minor, a staple of early concerto repertoire. Designed to reinforce fundamental skills in a musical context, the course focuses on tone production, détaché and legato bowing, early vibrato application, rhythmic clarity, and expressive phrasing. Christian highlights why Rieding’s writing is both technically approachable and musically mature, helping students build confidence while learning how to shape longer phrases, manage dynamics, and play with stylistic awareness across all three movements.

Seitz: Violin Concerto No. 5, Op. 22

In this course from Beginner Violin Part 2, Christian Kim guides you through Seitz Violin Concerto No. 5 in D Major, Op. 22, a cornerstone of early concerto repertoire. Focusing on musical phrasing, rhythmic clarity, and confident tone production, the lessons reinforce essential techniques such as smooth legato, clean détaché, dynamic shaping, and coordinated string crossings. Christian also highlights how to bring character and contrast to each movement while maintaining solid fundamentals in first position.

Vivaldi: Violin Concerto in A minor, RV 356

In this next installment of Beginner Violin Part 2, Christian Kim guides students through Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in A minor, one of the most iconic early concerto works in the violin repertoire. With a focus on elegant Baroque style, refined détaché, early third-position work, and clear phrasing, this course helps students move beyond simply playing the notes and toward a more musical, stylistically informed approach. Along the way, Christian highlights how lightness, direction, and thoughtful bowing can make this advanced beginner favorite both technically useful and genuinely expressive.
