I. The Maiden in the Bridal Chamber

The first movement tells the story of the bride-to-be on the day of her wedding, featuring the lush, orchestral string sound that Korngold made famous in his Hollywood career. Gupta points out the opening four harmonies, shares how to remain in tune with an accompanist, and dives into Korngold's many markings.

II. Dogberry and Verges (March of the Watch)

In this lesson, Gupta poses the question: how might we interpret sarcasm in our playing? There are a lot of articulation and tempo markings to manage, but the most important thing is that the character of a "grotesque funeral march" is maintained.

III. Scene in the Garden

The sensuous, lyrical third movement reminds Gupta of Bernstein's score to "West Side Story" – and for a good reason. Korngold evokes Mahler with his markings, broadcasts the story of a hero with his horn calls, and provides a space for the juiciest vibrato you can imagine.
